It started with the material
PUEBCO began in Tokyo in 2007, founded by Hirotaka Tanaka after years working in Japan’s apparel industry. His experience with fabrics, production and surplus materials helped shape a different approach to creating everyday objects.
Instead of sketching a product and finding something to make it from, Tanaka began with what he discovered on his travels through Asia: military canvas, retired parachutes, scrap steel and broken glass.
The question became: what could this be next?
That curiosity still drives PUEBCO today. The material comes first, and its next purpose follows.
A previous life is part of the appeal
At the heart of PUEBCO is a lovely idea: the things we surround ourselves with should be allowed to carry their history, just as we do.
A tent, a cooking oil container, a marble offcut or a dented steel drum can become the starting point for something useful again. Marks, wear and variations remain part of the finished piece, offering little clues to the material’s previous life.
It’s an approach that gives everyday objects texture, individuality and a story to tell.
